ACADEMY IN FACES

Today we are going to meet a fourth-year student of the Department of Animal Husbandry Technologies and Veterinary Medicine of the Smolensk State Agricultural Academy Bogdan Tretyakov. He is successfully mastering the curriculum and actively participating in the extracurricular activities of the Academy.
Bogdan, what prompted you to choose veterinary medicine as your profession?
- Initially, I wanted to study to become a doctor, but then I changed my mind and chose veterinary medicine, since I loved animals since childhood.
Have you had any incidents, experiences with animals, that were decisive in choosing your profession?
- My dog, when it was a puppy, was bitten by an infected tick. The dog got piroplasmosis, and I didn't know what to do. To prevent this from happening again, I decided to become a veterinarian.
What qualities do you think are most important for a successful veterinarian?
- Responsibility, patience and a clear knowledge of your business.
What do you know about modern trends in veterinary medicine? What areas are you particularly interested in?
- I don't know much about modern trends in veterinary medicine. Among the most significant areas, it is worth noting the introduction of biotechnology and genetic research aimed at improving the breed qualities of animals, as well as work on improving vaccines.
Do you have any pets?
- Of course. I have a dog, Jessie. Five years ago she was found on the street as a puppy. When I come home, she greets me first. This immediately improves my mood.
What do you think is the most difficult part of studying to become a veterinarian? And the most interesting?
- I had a hard time memorizing various terms and numerical indicators necessary for my profession. Among the most interesting things, I can note the detailed study of diseases with their pathogens, the mechanisms of their impact on the animal's body.
What practical skills have you already mastered during your training?
- Preliminary diagnosis, disease prevention methods and direct treatment of the animal.
Tell us about the most memorable incident during your internship.
- I only remember an incident during a trip to a farm. Our group was tasked with castrating 25 piglets. In fact, the operation was very simple, but as soon as it was my turn and I took the scalpel, my hands started shaking with excitement. Of course, I was afraid that I would do something wrong, but everything went well.
How do you cope with the emotional stress associated with working with sick animals?
- I try to alternate mental and physical work. Also, in my free time I can listen to music or play the guitar.
What are your plans after graduating from Smolensk State Agricultural Academy?
- First of all, since I am studying on a targeted basis, I want to start working in my specialty at the State Veterinary Service of my hometown. I won't make any plans beyond that.
Would you like to specialize in any area of veterinary science? If so, which one?
- Disease prevention, as I believe that in most cases it is better to prevent or at least reduce the likelihood of a disease occurring than to face it in full force.
You actively participate in the extracurricular activities of the Academy, perform at almost all events. Tell us about your hobby. How long have you been studying vocals?
- In general, I have been a music lover since childhood and have always tried to move through life with music. I only started studying vocals at the Academy, when I was a 2nd year student. It was here that I first felt what it meant to perform on stage in front of an audience. At first I was scared, but over time I even liked this activity.
What advice would you give to applicants who are considering veterinary medicine as their future profession?
- Veterinary medicine is a noble profession that requires constant self-development in this area, as well as great patience and, of course, love for working with animals. If you feel that you are ready to dedicate your life to this business, then go for it.
